Lipoedema is a bilateral enlargement of the legs due to abnormal deposits of subcutaneous fat and accumulation of fluid in the lower legs. The thighs can take on a “breeches” or “jodhpur” effect or described by some of my patients as “clouds”. The foot usually is normal with no swelling.
Despite dieting the patient does not manage to reduce the size of the legs. The legs may also be extremely painful to touch including a hot sensation, whereas they are usually cold to touch.
The condition mainly occurs in females and is often misdiagnosed as either Lymphoedema or obesity. It may also cause a psychological effect on the patient as well as a physical problem, causing much despair and depression.
The foot is usually normal with the swelling starting from the ankles upwards.
DIURETICS
Are often prescribed, in the belief that they will help with the swelling but these have very little benefit and are not good for the kidney with long term use. |
